NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Sanu Dieng-Cooper has won the election to fill an open seat in Newport News, replacing longtime City Treasurer Marty Eubank, who is retiring.
Dieng-Cooper defeated independent candidate Justin Kennedy, with unofficial results showing her ahead, 59% to 41% of the vote.
Dieng-Cooper, the Democratic candidate, is a Hampton University alumna who is now the first woman to hold the office. She had the endorsement of Eubank to replace him.
Dieng-Cooper holds a Bachelor of Science in finance and has more than 14 years in banking, credit management, and nonprofit executive roles. She said she wanted to expand citizens’ understanding of the roles and functions of the city treasurer’s office.
