Santa Fe voters approved by a wide margin two ballot questions that will switch up the balance of power on the City Council, stripping the incoming mayor of some of the powers wielded by outgoing Mayor Alan Webber, who served two terms as the city's first full-time "strong mayor."

The first ballot question asked voters whether the city charter should be amended to allow the council, with six votes, to fire the city manager, city attorney or city clerk. The second asked voters if the mayor should only vote in the case of a tie on the council, or when the vote would “provide the necessary number of votes to take action,” as opposed to allowing the mayor to cast a vote on every issue.

Voters were overwhelmingly supportive of the changes; early results, with some 15,000 of the votes tallied,
