BIDDEFORD, Maine — Voters headed to the polls in Biddeford on Election Day were encouraged to bring more than just their ballots—they were asked to donate to the local food pantry.
The Biddeford Food Pantry, which usually helps around 160 families each Tuesday, served more than 217 families this week—a number that continues to climb. In response to the growing need, local candidates running for office organized a food drive at Biddeford High School, where voters are casting their ballots.
“If you can bring a can of food or cereal—cereal is very expensive—cookies and crackers, any non-perishable food items,” Don Bisson, president of the pantry, said.
Bisson said the pantry currently spends $6,500 a week on food and often runs out by Thursday.
