IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Five Johnson County communities voted on adding a Local Option Sales Tax, and they all passed LOST with a comfortable margin of victory.
This would add a local one percent tax to the existing six percent sales tax for purchases in those cities.
Iowa City, Coralville, North Liberty, Shueyville, and Oxford voted on the same 1% local option sales tax, but all 5 communities planned on different ways to spend LOST funds.
By law, every community with a LOST has to spend half of the funds generated on property tax relief.
Things like rent, mortgage payments, utilities, and several other types of expenses are not subject to a local option sales tax.
In Coralville, Lost passed comfortably with 85% of the vote.
