GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. —
Dianne Mitchell is currently leading in the Republican special election primary runoff for South Carolina House District 21, but a recount is expected due to the narrow margin of victory.
The special election was called after state Rep. Bobby Cox resigned in August.
With 100% of precincts reporting, Mitchell secured just over 50% of the vote, leading Steve Nail by 22 votes.
The margin is likely to trigger a mandatory recount under state law due to the winning margin being one percent or less.
Mitchell was seen celebrating with friends, family, and other state representatives as the results came in early Tuesday night. She is the past chair of the Greenville County Republican Women's Club.
Nail is the current dean of Anderson University's College of Business
