PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - It’s time for the highest tides of the year! The king tides return to the Oregon coastline Wednesday, November 5 through Friday, November 7.
This is the first round of three that will happen over the next couple months. King tides will also occur December 4-7, 2025 and January 1-4, 2026.
CAUSE OF KING TIDES
Tides are driven by the gravitational force of the moon, and king tides are no different! When the sun, moon and Earth are in alignment, we get the highest high tides and lowest low tides of the year.
King tides occur when the Earth is at its perihelion (closest point to the sun), which typically happens in January. Concurrently, the moon is at its perigee (closest point to the earth), which occurs once a month. King tide dates are determined when the moon is
