FAYETTE — Voters rejected a measure that would have allowed the city of Fayette to appoint a police chief to replace the city marshal.
The Fayette Board of Alderman voted in July to propose the policy.
The city marshal is an elected position that leads law enforcement in the city. The chief of police would have replaced the position and performed its duties.
A police chief would have been appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council.
"It's been a hot topic of the town so giving really just stressing that the importance of the people, getting out and voting matters," one voter said Tuesday.
An anonymous Fayette alderman wrote in the Fayette Advertiser that it would be easier to remove a police chief than a city marshal.
