SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — In a city known for its affluence and deep investment in public education, voters in Shaker Heights on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved Issue 51, a proposed 9.9-mill operating levy that school officials say is critical to maintaining the district’s high standards and avoiding deep budget cuts.

With 16 out of 25 precincts reporting, more than 66% of voters approved the measure, according to unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
