The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has reiterated its plea for a nationwide prohibition on the public sale of fireworks, stating that "loud and unpredictable" pyrotechnics are still causing distress to both animals and humans.

This plea comes a year after the tragic death of baby red panda Roxie at Edinburgh Zoo, which was attributed to stress caused by fireworks set off throughout the city centre.

Her mother Ginger passed away five days prior, with zoologists suggesting her death could also have been due to stress from fireworks.

The wildlife conservation charity initiated its campaign for a ban last year, collaborating with Police Scotland , local schools, and the City of Edinburgh Council to raise awareness about the potential dangers posed by fireworks.
