COLUMBUS, Ohio — As investigators continue to search for what caused Monday’s gas explosion and fire at the historic Kelton House in downtown Columbus, one couple who married there nearly 20 years ago says the loss feels personal.

“It was a perfect venue for us,” said Troy Gottfried, who married Kate VanDerzee at the Kelton House on May 27, 2005.

The couple said they were drawn to the venue because of its history.

“It wasn't just a small, intimate venue, but we could also have tours of the place during the reception, so our family could learn about how Ohio participated in the Underground Railroad,” Gottfried said.

VanDerzee added, “I just loved the outdoor space and saw the history behind it. I thought it was such a unique venue.”
