IOWA CITY — As Cooper Koch finished off a frenetic, hustle-filled sequence with a two-handed fast-break dunk to give Iowa a 41-19 lead over Robert Morris, Ben McCollum spun toward the crowd as he had done once earlier in the game.
“Let’s get up!” the Hawkeyes’ new men’s basketball leader, replete in a gold tie, shouted as he waved his arms.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena was only about half-full. But the listed crowd of 9,232 (which was probably more like 7,000) was booming, revved up and thoroughly entertained.
A little later, early in the second half, Bennett Stirtz flew through the air and slammed home an alley-oop dunk from former Drake teammate Kael Combs.
Once again, McCollum erupted, shouting and encouraging the crowd to ramp up the excitement and noise even more.
