Wrexham star James McClean has confirmed in a statement to talkSPORT that he did punch a Cardiff City fan in self-defence.

McClean was involved in a bust-up with rival supporters ahead of a Carabao Cup clash on October 28, in which the Red Dragons lost 2-1.

Before kick-off, the 36-year-old found himself the target of visiting Cardiff fans at the Racecourse ground after parking his car.

A Wrexham source has said that the former Republic of Ireland international acted in self-defence after coming under attack.

Investigations are currently ongoing to establish how Cardiff fans accessed the car park ahead used by Wrexham stars.

However, McClean has since confirmed in a statement to talkSPORT that it was a confrontation that wasn't reported to the police.
