The first of more than 1,100 homes planned for the Greenbrier Preserve development in the Huntsville part of Limestone County are already under construction.

To the development’s west off the Interstate 65-565 interchange, a 395-acre site once used for farming is expected to become the site of about 3,000 homes and other forms of housing in a mixed-use development to be known as Westmoore Landing .

The two developments could be just the tip of the iceberg in the southeastern corner of the county once known for cotton fields that are now within the city limits of Alabama’s largest city.

According to the update of Huntsville’s master plan for Limestone County approved by the Planning Commission on Tuesday, about 113,000 housing units of various types are forecast in the next 50 years
