With this government shutdown now being the longest in U.S. history, Governor Kay Ivey is giving two million dollars to food banks across the state.
The new funding will support 8 food banks across the state, including the Food Bank of North Alabama.
SNAP benefits expired on November 1st, meaning thousands of families are missing their benefits for the first time this month. Right now, hundreds of thousands of Alabamians rely on SNAP, including more than 300,000 children, 102,000 seniors, and people living with disabilities.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources plans to redirect three million dollars to the Feeding Alabama Food Bank Network. Meanwhile, families participating in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program will receive an extra $300 per child for their caregi
