Israelis in Jerusalem expressed mixed emotions Wednesday after waking up to the news that Zohran Mamdani had been elected as the next mayor of New York City.
The 34-year-old far-left state lawmaker has alarmed many Jews with harsh criticism of Israel, including saying its military campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide.
However, he has won over many progressive Jewish voters with vows to make the city more affordable and equitable.
In addition, he made overtures to Jewish voters throughout the campaign, denouncing “atrocities” committed by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and describing the attacks as a “horrific war crime.”
But Mamdani has not retreated from his long-standing support for Palestinian rights.
In the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim, some voiced support for Mamdani.
In West Jerusalem’s bustling outdoor market, others said they were scared that Mamdani would now hold the highest office in New York City.
For Israelis, Mamdani’s victory wasn’t just another sign of the country’s increasing isolation during the Israel-Hamas war.
The fact that it came from the U.S. signified something much larger: an avowedly pro-Palestinian candidate could gain major office in the country that has historically been Israel’s main backer.
