Polk Street in downtown Houston closes to make way for George R. Brown Convention Center project

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- To make way for the expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center, Polk Street closed on Wednesday morning to all traffic.

The closure has been met with pushback from residents who live east of downtown.

They've argued that the closure cuts off their access to downtown Houston.

Houston First Corporation says the closure of Polk Street is all part of a plan to redefine downtown.

The project, officials say, will generate more than $20 billion in economic impact over the next 30 years.
