ALCOA, Tenn. — The U.S. government shutdown reached Day 35 on Tuesday, tying the longest in the nation’s history as President Biden and members of Congress have yet to reach a deal to reopen federal agencies. Without an agreement by Wednesday, the shutdown will officially become the longest ever.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned of potential “mass chaos” in the coming week if air traffic controllers miss a second paycheck.
“The longer this goes on, every day these hard-working Americans have bills they have to pay, and they’re being forced to make decisions and choices,” he said. “Do they go to work as an air traffic controller, or do they have to find a different job to get resources, money, to put food on their table, to put gas in their car?"
