In a heartwarming act of courage and love, two young women from the Sundarbans in West Bengal, 19-year-old Riya Sardar and 20-year-old Rakhi Naskar, got married at a local temple, defying societal norms and expectations around same-sex relationships.
Riya and Rakhi are both professional dancers. The two met around two years ago and gradually developed a deep bond.
“We are in a relationship for two years. We first met in a temple. We want to be together for the rest of our lives,” said Rakhi.
While Riya’s family opposed the relationship, Rakhi’s family and several villagers extended their support to the couple. With their help, the two women organised a simple but joyous wedding ceremony at a local temple. The pair exchanged garlands as localss cheered and celebrated their union.
