MORRISVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — As the Raleigh-Durham International Airport continues to quickly grow, a team of police dogs and their K-9 officers work each day to ensure passengers are safe.
Augustus, or Gus, is one of them. "He loves coming to work every day," said K-9 Officer Andrew Wines, Gus' partner.
His job is to sniff out potential explosive devices.
"When he alerts, he stands in like a locked position, we call it a focus alert," Wines explained.
Wines and Gus undergo extensive training, hiding small amounts of explosive material in suitcases and other areas of airport property.
"Their noses work a lot better than ours ever could, so he’s able to figure out that there’s an explosive in the room before anyone else can," said Wines.
