Zohran Mamdani won the New York mayoral race by eight percentage points, beating out former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

Voters handed Donald Trump ’s Republicans a sharp rebuke in a string of state and local elections, giving the opposition Democrats a shot of adrenalin after months of struggling to effectively fight the U.S. President’s sweeping agenda.

As the scale of the results became clear on Wednesday, Democratic leaders cheered their victories as a shot across Mr. Trump’s bow, while the President blamed his party’s losses on the federal government shutdown, which is now the longest in the country’s history.

While the Democrats had been expected to win all of the elections – which took place in blue or purple states – the size of some of the victories was a surprise.
