DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An inmate has died after being found unresponsive at the Dorchester County jail.

Officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office said its detention deputies were alerted to an unresponsive 71-year-old male inmate on Wednesday morning.

The deputies immediately began rendering aid to the inmate, according to the sheriff’s office.

Crews from multiple agencies, including Dorchester County Fire Rescue, EMS, and medical personnel at the detention center, attempted to provide life-saving measures; however, the inmate did not survive.

That inmate has not yet been publicly identified.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the inmate’s death.
