NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker announced he will resign from his position in December.

Tucker, formerly the CEO of a private security company, was appointed commissioner in 2024 after the previous leader, Laura Kavanaugh, resigned.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the 35th New York City Fire Commissioner," Tucker said in a statement.

He will leave his post on Dec. 19, just a few days before Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani takes office.

"Between now and then, I will continue to lead the greatest fire department in the world and will ensure an orderly transition," he said.

A spokesperson for the Mayor's Office said the city will have an acting fire commissioner in the transition, which will be announced later.
