As the government shutdown stretches into its 36th day, the longest in U.S. history , roughly 750,000 Alabamians have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
Starting Nov. 1, SNAP benefits, otherwise known as food stamps, were suspended nationwide, impacting many low-income families who depended on the program for access to food.
And President Donald Trump said in a post to Truth Social Tuesday the administration won’t pay for these benefits until after the shutdown ends, in potential defiance of a federal court order and in conflict with what his administration told a judge Monday.
But several Alabama restaurants have come forward for their communities and are offering free meals until SNAP benefits return.
