WASHINGTON >> The lawyer representing Donald Trump’s administration faced skeptical questions from conservative and liberal U.S. Supreme Court justices today over the legality of the Republican president’s sweeping tariffs in a case with implications for the global economy that marks a major test of Trump’s powers.
During more than 2-1/2 hours of arguments, some of the conservative justices also signaled sympathy toward some points made by U.S. Solicitor General D. John Sauer, arguing for the administration, including about the president’s broad authority on conducting foreign policy. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority.
Justices across the ideological spectrum pressed Sauer about whether Trump had intruded on the power of Congress in imposing tariffs under a 1977 law meant for use
