The Nevada Senate Democratic caucus on Tuesday, Nov. 4, announced that if a special legislative session is called later this month, as expected, they plan to introduce legislation to establish an emergency cash assistance program to help the nearly 500,000 Nevadans whose food stamp benefits have lapsed.

For that to happen, Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo’s special session proclamation would need to include language allowing the Legislature to take such action.

The Senate Democrats’ proposal would provide $45.5 million in immediate cash assistance to enrollees of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the federally funded program better known as SNAP or food stamps, according to Nevada Current .
