ANN ARBOR, MI - Three more Chinese scholars linked to a University of Michigan lab face federal charges in an ongoing smuggling case.

Xu Bai and Fengfan Zhang were both charged with conspiracy to smuggle goods into the U.S. for reportedly being the recipients of the several packages of related to nematode research, according to Nov. 4 complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit. Nematodes are a type of roundworm.

A third man, 30-year-old Zhiyong Zhang, was also charged with giving false statements to federal investigators, the complaint states.

These three new scholars mean there are now four scholars linked to the lab of UM Professor Shawn Xu of the Life Sciences Institute. Chengxuan Han, a Chinese citizen, previously pleaded no contest in the roundworm smuggling case.
