Nueces County commissioners during a meeting on Nov. 5 approved a 60-day extension of the countywide burn ban order that was set to expire Nov. 30.

The extension comes as extremely dry conditions persist across South Texas. According to the National Weather Service, November is expected to be warmer and dryer than usual, and the current Keetch-Byram Drought Index — a measure of forest fire potential from zero to 800 — is 649, making forest fires much more likely.

The order, signed by County Judge Connie Scott, prohibits all outdoor burning, including beach bonfires, within the county’s unincorporated areas.

The restriction will be in place until Jan. 20, 2026.

However, if conditions change before that time has expired, Scott may rescind the restrictions.
