MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner says hundreds of inmates in the jail at 201 Poplar will be moved to other facilities due to overcrowding issues.
Bonner told WREG on Wednesday he has signed a contract for 300 inmates at 201 to be housed in other state and federal facilities in western and middle Tennessee. They must remain in-state.
He also said he'd signed a contract for 150 inmates to be moved to another facility in Shelby County, though he declined to say where yet for security reasons.
Problems and overcrowding at the jail has been amplified since the Memphis Safe Task Force started. The federal task force has made hundreds of added arrests in the last month.
The population at the Shelby County Jail increased from 2,776 when task force operations began, to 2,932
