FREEPORT, Ill. — A local township has put thousands of dollars toward fighting hunger.

On Wednesday, Freeport Township announced that it had allocated $18,000 to support local food pantries in buying food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Township said it gave the funds to better serve residents and address concerns about SNAP benefit cuts.

Local Freeport food pantries that are part of the Northern Illinois Food Bank Network will get a portion of the allocated Township funds directly in their Food Bank accounts.

Freeport Township Supervisor Patrick Sellers said the allocation will give their local food pantries the necessary funds to help Freeport's most vulnerable residents.

Sellers also stressed the importance of acting on the situation.
