ROCKFORD, Ill. — Local police are remembering an officer who died while on duty on the anniversary of his death.

Wednesday marked 8 years since Rockford Police officer Jaimie Cox was killed at 30 years old during a traffic stop near Rockford University.

Around 1 a.m. on Nov. 5, 2017, Cox stopped a pickup truck driven by 49-year-old Eddie Patterson Jr. near the intersection of E. State Street and Dawn Avenue. Cox was said to have been trying to arrest Patterson for having a revoked driver's license.

The truck drove off, dragging Cox with it for two blocks before it crashed.

Cox was able to call for help at the scene of the crash and was brought to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Patterson was found dead inside the truck from a gunshot wound.
