NIXA, Mo. (KY3) - Nixa firefighters are reassessing their funding strategy after voters rejected a proposed 25-cent property tax increase that would have provided additional revenue for the fire district.

More than 65 percent of voters in Nixa opposed the measure, which failed by 945 votes.

“We were sad to see that. But, you know, we understand everyone has to make the decision for their family,” said Whitney Weaver, assistant chief of the Nixa Fire Protection District.

The fire district has not received an operational increase since 2003. If passed, the additional funding would have gone toward firefighter benefits and increased pay.

Weaver said operational expenses have increased significantly in recent years.
