MOCKSVILLE, N.C. — Two people have been charged after deputies say they repeatedly operated an unlicensed child-care facility out of their Davie County home, despite months of warnings to stop.
According to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began on Jan. 27, 2025, when the agency was asked to assist the N.C. Division of Child Development and Early Education with a report of a possible illegal child-care operation on Whitney Road in Mocksville.
Deputies said they arrived to find 26 children inside the home, ranging from newborns to 7 years old. The two adults living there — Samantha Marie Orfino, 32, and Hayden Allen Brown, 33 — were not licensed by the state and were instructed to stop operating until properly licensed.
