Assistant Principal Rhea Ervin doubts her Abbett Elementary students fully understood the significance of a Wednesday afternoon assembly celebrating the school's 75th anniversary, but she said that's OK.

Years from now – perhaps when the Fort Wayne Community school reaches its centennial – the students will look back as alumni and realize their contribution to its story, Ervin said.

"You are a part of history," she told the students.

Held in the gym, the 20-minute rededication ceremony featured a proclamation by Mayor Sharon Tucker and the unveiling of commissioned artwork of the school by local artist Jeremy Selzer.

The southeast Fort Wayne school is named after Merle J. Abbett, who led the district as superintendent from 1932 to 1952. The building was originally dedicated Nov. 5, 195
