Residents of the Kings Crest community in Osceola County are facing higher property taxes and service changes after the city of St. Cloud annexed the area in February.

Melvin Rivera chose to live in the community because of its nice area, lack of association and low taxes. However, the annexation meant St. Cloud police and fire departments would now respond to major incidents — a change Rivera viewed positively.

"I got to give them that one. The St. Cloud Police Department is a good department, so I'm not worried about that," Rivera said.

The annexation brought a significant increase in property taxes, which are rising by $1,200. This is a concern for Rivera and his wife, who are on a fixed income.
