Starting Friday morning, the Federal Aviation Administration will cancel thousands of flights per day in dozens of cities to address fatigue among air traffic controllers working without pay due to the government shutdown. The FAA administrator announced the decision Wednesday in Washington.

"We are starting to see some evidence that fatigue is building in the system in ways that we feel, we need to work towards relieving some of that pressure," FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said Wednesday.

The solution involves reducing flights by 10% across 40 "high-volume" markets, resulting in about 3,500 to 4,000 flight cancellations a day in those cities.
