New Delhi: GPS spoofing, the manipulation of satellite navigation signals, has become a growing threat to global aviation and is now beginning to impact flight operations within India. On Tuesday evening, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport witnessed heavy air traffic congestion, reportedly aggravated by GPS spoofing.
The problem was compounded by a sudden shift in wind direction towards easterlies, forcing several flights to divert to Jaipur despite all four of IGI’s runways being fully operational. Data from flight tracking platform Flightradar24 revealed that IGI ranked second worldwide that night for airport disruptions, behind only Kathmandu.
