Two Bristol school gymnasiums will now bear the names of local police officers killed in the line of duty.

Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy were ambushed and killed on Oct. 12, 2022, while responding to a 911 call.

The tragedy deeply impacted the community, which continues to honor their service and sacrifice.

At the new Northeast Middle School, students will now play and compete inside the Sgt. Alex Hamzy Gymnasium.

Across town, the gym at Greene-Hills School will be renamed in honor of DeMonte, who previously served as a school resource officer there.

City and school officials say the renaming is meant to ensure future generations remember the officers’ commitment to protecting their community.
