Democrats notched wins in gubernatorial races, mayoral contests and a key ballot measure on Tuesday, but redistricting fights, an upcoming Supreme Court ruling and a tougher 2026 U.S. Senate map could temper that momentum heading into the midterms.
Most analysts who spoke with Newsweek said that the Senate will be a tougher feat for Democrats than the House, although there is still a lot up in the air, given ongoing and potentially upcoming redistricting plans and rules.
Doug Gordon, co-founder of Upshift Strategies, told Newsweek about Democrats’ recent victories: “Republicans have struggled when Trump is not on the ballot,” adding that while the midterms are ages away in political terms, Tuesday’s results may be “just a great night, or a larger trend is still to be determined.”
