AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Captain Michael Good of the Aiken Salvation Army has been preparing for an increased need caused by the lack of SNAP funding as the government shutdown is now the longest in U.S. history at 36 days.

Still, the need coming through their doors is shocking. In the last month, they’ve referred 754 people to services.

“It’s a little overwhelming to see the number of individuals who stand in need,” Captain Good said.

The food pantry shelves are emptying faster than ever, as the traffic through their pantry has doubled since this time last year.

“A year ago, we could make one large food purchase and it would get us through two months. We are now making a food purchase every two weeks,” Good said.
