As of Wednesday evening, the ice skating rink is now open at San Francisco’s Union Square, which for many signals the start of the holiday season in the city. The annual tradition is coming on the heels of some welcome news for Union Square: the Macy’s store anchoring the square will be sticking around.

Wednesday evening, elected officials, business leaders, and community members gathered at Union Square to celebrate the annual opening of the Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square.

The annual event brought in visitors, some of whom are now making their own tradition of welcoming the rink on opening day each year.

“I love it, this is my third time coming to the rink for opening day,” said Dana Gillis of Oakland, who works in San Francisco.
