Zohran Kwame Mamdani, the 34-year-old mayor-elect of New York City, has begun his new chapter with both humility and a sense of heritage. Just a day after scripting history by becoming the first Muslim and first South Asian to lead America’s largest city and its youngest mayor in a century, Mamdani of Indian-origin kicked off his “busy first day” with a special lunch featuring Indian flavours, joined by his close ally and fellow Democrat, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Sharing glimpses of his day on X, Mamdani wrote, “A busy first day as your Mayor-elect: early morning interviews, transition announcements and meetings.
