NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Thursday marks day 37 of the government shutdown, now the longest shutdown in the country’s history.
With many federal workers without pay, and crucial benefits like SNAP cut or on hold, state lawmakers are working to help families who may be struggling.
State Rep. Wendell Gilliard is set to hold an emergency meeting at North Charleston City Hall on Thursday afternoon to address the looming food crisis in the Lowcountry.
Representatives from Rep. Gilliard’s office said the meeting will be centered around the SNAP Program. The Charleston County Legislative Delegation is expected to attend.
It comes as some food banks in the area are struggling to reconcile increasing needs with decreasing donations.
