Mountain lion sightings are rare in South Dakota, with wildlife officials estimating there are only 200 to 300 in the wild in the state.
Still, in a recent social media post , Deadwood city officials warned that mountain lion sightings in the area are on the rise: "Remember we live in cat country, be alert! Never approach or corner a mountain lion or any wild animal."
Historically, mountain lions existed throughout South Dakota, but now they're primarily found in the Black Hills and only occasionally travel through other parts of the state, according to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks .
