South Florida Bulls quarterback Byrum Brown (17) runs the ball during the first quarter against the Florida Atlantic Owls at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

Leading into the weekend, the American Conference headlines the Thursday night slate with one of the most fun teams in the country looking to stay alive in the conference race against a frisky opponent.

The USF Bulls (6-2, 3-1 American) need this win to stay in the race for the American, as they are part of a group of six teams with one conference loss. This week, they host the UTSA Roadrunners (4-4, 2-2 American) from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

UTSA vs. South Florida prediction, pick:

This is not a given for USF. The Roadrunners played Tulane last weekend and blew out the Green Wave 48-26. This week, they get a chance to ruin USF's chances at the conference title.

USF is going to score points. It's just what they do. They rank No. 6 in the country with 40.4 points per game. Alternatively, they allow 24.4 points per game, which is good enough with how explosive they are.

The problem for UTSA is that they give up 30.2 points per game, No. 109 in college football. They are now tasked with handling USF quarterback Byrum Brown, who can do a bit of everything. Brown is approaching 2,000 yards through the air and has almost 600 more on the ground to go with 25 total touchdowns.

UTSA has the quarterback to stick around, though. USF gives up 272 passing yards per game. The Roadrunners can lean on Owen McCown, who has 1,680 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. To keep this game close, he has to be a catalyst for their offense.

Prediction: USF 41, UTSA 30

Best Bet: UTSA +14
