The Harford County Board of Education must revisit its evaluation procedures for transparency and community participation, per a directive from the Maryland State Board of Education.
The state decision also reverses a decision by the county’s board of education that removed “Flamer” from middle and high school libraries.
The county board’s initial decision to remove the book from library shelves sparked outcry from some parents and other groups who appealed the decision to the state.
“Flamer” is about a boy navigating friendships, bullying, sexuality and self-discovery, according to its description. However, some have said it contains graphic language and vulgarity.
