Five people have been charged with distributing fentanyl that led to the deaths of Akira Stein, the 19-year-old daughter of Blondie guitarist Chris Stein, and Leandro De Niro-Rodriguez, the 19-year-old grandson of actor Robert De Niro.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced the arrests on Thursday, Oct. 30. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said the group operated a drug ring specifically targeting young people in New York City.
“The defendants ran a fentanyl distribution network that sold thousands of fentanyl pills to teenagers and young adults living in New York City, relying heavily on social media to target young drug users,” Clayton said in the announcement .
