Nancy Pelosi said that she would not seek reelection in 2026, ending a nearly 40-year congressional career that included two stints as the first female Speaker of the House.

“With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative,” Pelosi, 85, said in a video posted on social media on Thursday.

Her retirement had been expected, and one high profile candidate, State Rep. Scott Wiener, had already entered the race to succeed her to represent her heavily Democratic San Francisco district.
