A man is dead after a shoplifting incident at a Walmart near Cutler Bay ended in a shooting involving a Miami-Dade deputy on Thursday morning, the sheriff's office said.
Around 7:15 a.m., a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputy was patrolling a supermarket near US-1 and Southwest 211 Street. While on patrol, a loss prevention officer notified MDSO of an individual who was "actively stealing," said Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz.
The deputy then attempted to make contact with that individual, but he fled, leading the officer on a pursuit. The chase then resulted in a physical altercation just outside of a Walmart located at 21151 S. Dixie Hwy.
Cordero-Stutz said that during the altercation, the shoplifting suspect showed that he was armed and the deputy discharged his service weapon
