Parades and other events honoring Veterans Day will spring up along the Interstate 49 corridor from Bella Vista to Fort Smith beginning Saturday, according to public notices.

Events will include Fayetteville's first Veterans Day parade in 10 years, according to city records. Meanwhile, Fort Smith organizers will host what they tout as the biggest Veterans Day celebration in Arkansas for the 13th year running.

Veterans Day itself falls on Nov. 11, which is on Tuesday this year. The federal holiday was originally Armistice Day, commemorating the day the fighting stopped in the "Great War" as World War I was called at the time. Although the end of that war came with a peace treaty months later, both sides agreed to stop fighting on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Co
