WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a South Carolina man for scamming a Wythe County senior citizen out of $25,000.
Deputies arrested Carlis Orlando Pressley of Nesmith, S.C.; he was charged with:
Extortion
Attempted extortion
According to the sheriff’s office, the victim of the scam received a fake “Microsoft Alert” on his computer and called the number listed; he believed he was speaking with Microsoft and a federal agent.
They convinced the victim to withdraw $25,000 for use in a supposed federal investigation; a man came to the victim’s home to collect the cash, according to officials.
The following day, the “agent” demanded another $15,000 and threatened the victim with an arrest if he refused.
